This stage of sleep is when your brain processes and organizes memories and emotions from the day. EMDR uses this same bilateral stimulation to help your brain gently reprocess traumatic memories, allowing them to become less overwhelming and easier to integrate into your life.
After EMDR, you will still remember your trauma, but it may feel more distant. Your brain and body will fully know that what happened is in the past, and as a result, you will no longer be triggered by reminders of the trauma.
